In sport, three factors matter most: the ability to perform under load, the speed of recovery, and resilience to training-induced stress. Cordyceps is one of the most extensively described functional mushrooms in the context of physical performance, as its effects combine three areas that are crucial for athletic outcomes: oxygen metabolism, energy management, and adaptation to physiological stress.

Cordyceps as a natural adaptogen

Adaptogens are natural substances whose activity profile supports homeostasis and the body’s non-specific resistance to stressors. In sports practice, this translates into helping maintain stable performance and more efficient recovery despite increasing training loads.

Cordyceps has been used for centuries in the traditional medical systems of Tibet and China. Today, it is studied, among other things, for its potential effects on exercise-related parameters, including tolerance to both aerobic and anaerobic effort.

How can Cordyceps improve physical performance?

The most commonly discussed mechanisms involve three main axes of action.

1. More efficient oxygen utilization

Human studies (including research involving older adults) have reported improvements in performance parameters following supplementation with specific Cordyceps preparations (such as Cs-4) in placebo-controlled trials.

For athletes, this may translate into the ability to maintain pace more easily at the same intensity level or to improve tolerance to aerobic exercise.

2. Shifting the fatigue threshold and tolerance to high-intensity effort

In randomized studies involving physically active individuals, supplementation with blends containing Cordyceps sinensis has been associated with improved tolerance to high-intensity exercise after periods of 1–3 weeks.

3. Energy metabolism and the “cost” of exercise

Cordyceps is also analyzed for its potential impact on metabolic efficiency, including pathways related to cellular energy production. In sports practice, the key question is whether the body can produce energy more steadily and return to equilibrium more quickly after exertion.

Cordyceps and recovery – why athletes are interested

Athletic performance is built not only through training itself, but also through the rate of recovery afterward. Cordyceps is sometimes considered as part of a recovery strategy because its activity profile is associated with:

  • support for adaptation to training stress,
  • potential influence on post-exercise inflammation and oxidative stress,
  • improved tolerance to training intensity, which can facilitate higher training volume.

If you engage in strength training, physique-focused training, compete in multi-day events, or perform multiple training sessions per day, recovery is the area in which the potential adaptogenic effect may have the greatest practical value.

The “caterpillar fungus” and sports myths – where did the legend come from?

For years, Cordyceps has also appeared in sports as part of a media narrative following the record-breaking performances of Chinese female runners in the 1990s. One frequently cited article is “Chinese Caterpillar Fungus and World Record Runners” (American Entomologist, 1994), which describes this phenomenon and its context.

It is important to make a clear distinction here: a sports legend is not evidence of efficacy, but it does explain why Cordyceps entered Western scientific discussion and supplementation practice.

Which athletes may benefit most from Cordyceps?

It is most often considered by individuals who prioritize:

  • aerobic endurance (running, cycling, triathlon, mountain sports),
  • tolerance to high-intensity effort (interval training, combat sports, team sports),
  • recovery and training volume (gym training, cross-training, twice-daily workouts).

How to approach supplementation in practice

  • Choose products with clearly defined raw material specifications (species, extraction method, standardization).
  • Assess effects using measurable indicators: heart rate at submaximal intensity, time to exhaustion, sleep quality, and recovery rate.
  • Be mindful of interactions—if you are taking medications (especially anticoagulants or immunosuppressants) or have chronic conditions, consulting a qualified professional is recommended.
